Republicans back Obama's version of meeting with Iraqi leaders

Original post made by Peter, another community, on Sep 19, 2008

Contrary to some claims on this forum, derived from an erroneous New York Post column and a huge echo chamber effect by rightist bloggers, Obama didn't ask the Iraqi's to delay signing the Status of Forces agreement and interfere with U.S. foreign policy. Turns out that the meeting was also attended by Ambassador Crocker, Sen. Chuck Hagel, the embassy's Legislative Affairs advisor, and other U.S. government officials. According to this column, they all back Obama's account of the meeting. Web Link

Well, Sharon/Meg/Pam/Jane/Bike etc--you were saying about Obama and violations of the Logan Act? Don't you know better than to trust the NY Post.
I think an immediate apology from McCain warranted since he not only questioned Obama's patriotism but also accused him of breaking the law

Elect,

Jake Tapper is a well-know hack for the liberal left. He even wrote a book saying that the 2000 election was stolen by Bush (it wasn't).

He has no credibility.

Kevin

from the original link:

"Attendees of the meeting back Obama's account, including not just Sen. Jack Reed, D-R.I., but Hagel, and Senate Foreign Relations Committee staffers from both parties. Officials of the Bush administration who were briefed on the meeting by the U.S. embassy in Baghdad also support Obama's account and dispute the Post story and McCain attack.

The Post story is "absolutely not true," Hagel spokesman Mike Buttry told ABC News."

So you are saying that Tapper is lying when he says that Reed, Hagel and officials of the Bush Administration support Obama;s account and dispute the Post story?

So, i can assume you believe the right wing hack from the Post.

I have to agree, Elect.

McCain just seems totally divorced from the issues at this point and has dedicated himself to slinging mud.

What poor judgement.

"So you are saying that Tapper is lying when he says that Reed, Hagel and officials of the Bush Administration support Obama;s account and dispute the Post story?"

Elect,

I am saying there is no reason to accept Tapper's distortions of anything. The usual tactic of such hacks is to leave out full quotes, and to take them out of context. Such deconstructions are then reconstructed into a farce.

He may be completely right, however, there is no reason to believe him. The larger press should simply ask Obama, directly, if the original story is true, or not. Barack should have absolutely no problem saying, "No, no truth to it, whatsoever". He should then be subjected to a few penetrating questions, based on his denial. If he passes the smell test, Obama is home free.

The fact that Tapper is put out there as a credible source is a joke. Let Chris Matthews have Obama on his show, then ask him the questions. Matthews is in the tank for Obama, but he at least has some personal pride, and he will make it tough and fair.

Kevin,

Sure there is, Hagel has easy access to the media and speak up if Tapper's wrong. I expect, since this ABC, that the denial's recorded.

Hagel has been against the liberation of Iraq for some time. However, I would encorage a serious questioning of him on this subject. It surprises me that he has not, yet, come out to support Obama on this subject.
