Johnson takes LSU job; Stanford left holding the bag

Original post made on Apr 11, 2008

Trent Johnson may have been too honest for his own good, describing his situation at Stanford as his dream job and letting anyone within earshot know it. Underpaid and apparently underappreciated at Stanford, the 51-year-old coach was introduced as the new men's coach at Louisiana State during a press conference on Thursday in Baton Rouge.

Tumultuous week indeed! Basketball at Stanford has certainly taken some hits this week. The men's sweet-sixteen fizzle versus Texas; the premature departure of the Lopez twins from their school of destiny (Did they know about their coach's eminent departure?); Montgomery snatched up by Cal (Would he have accepted a return to coach the Cardinal?); the women's disaster in the NCAA final; Johnson's shocker (Hey, guys & gals, the shiny venues aren't enough - put your coaching $$$ where your mouth is) ... WOW!!! - Anything left to tell us about? Maples has morphed from a hot basketball venue to a museum of fond memories, and therein lies the athletic department's consolation: What a relief to have only invested funds for a meager expansion. The actual rebuilding effort will now be focused upon a program left in disarray. Hey, there's always Bobby Knight! P.S. Don't feel too bad as fellow Stanford fans, for my 2nd favorite (and recently adopted) team, North Carolina, self-destructed as well.
