Libraries around the country at offering on-line registration for several years now. In fact, this sort of possible functionality has been waiting since the late 1970s to see the light of day, when microcomputers and modems began to appear in people's homes. It was just about thirty (30) years ago when BBSs (Bulletin Boards) pioneered the way to the World Wide Web (WWW).

And here we are in the Silicon Valley (where HP and Stanford started it all)--and the Palo Alto library is just now getting around to provide this clearly obvious feature for on-line library use.

Apart from the comment already made, this is a one time service for new residents, or at least new library users.

I have had my library card for years and this service does me no good. I don't think this is anything to write home about.
