After taking off her underwear in Whole Foods Market in Palo Alto, a middle-aged woman was arrested early Friday.

Officers received a call around 8:30 a.m. that a woman was throwing bread and other items in the store, Palo Alto Police Sgt. Natasha Powers said.

“She was sitting and screaming,” Powers said.

The woman, who refused to identify herself, took off her underwear and might have thrown them at someone, but she did not hit anyone, Powers said.

“I know she took them off. I don’t know what she did with them after that,” Powers said.

The woman was arrested on charges of assault and creating a disturbance and is currently in the San Jose Main Jail, Powers said.

  1. Seriously, I’d like to know too. Which city does she call home and does she live in one of Palo Alto’s downtown shelters at the expense of local residents and kids?

  2. It does not seem unlikely that this preson was one of our “transients” who’ve been much in the news lately with respect to criminal incidents – both alarming and amusing.

Even the amusing and other minor incidents caused by the hoard of homeless that have descended on our city are “serious” in that they take police time and resources away from solving and deterring dangerous crime. Recently there have been armed robberies on Tennyson Avenue, numerous heists of local gas stations and grocery stores, and similar events that don’t have the laugh-factor that the underrwear woman story does.

One sees posts on this thread alledging that the Opportunity Center is a source of many police calls. It’s certainly true that the more homeless we have wandering our streets, the less time police will have for criminal matters.

There are many reasons we need to close the OC. Whether this woman was part of the OC-related nonsense or not, this is a reminder of why we need to start being firmer with the transients who are endangering our town.
