Palo Alto Post 375 advanced to the second round of the American Legion 19-U Area 2 Tournament with a 12-8 victory over Burlingame on Tuesday at Baylands Athletic Center. Palo Alto will face top-seeded San Mateo on Tuesday at 7 p.m. San Mateo had a first-round bye. Post 375 is seeded fifth in the five-team tournament.
Menlo-Atherton High grad Matt Hornberger pitched eight strong innings for Post 375 and left with a 12-3 lead, only one of the runs being earned. He trailed 3-0 after two innings before Palo Alto struck for six runs in the third and six more in the seventh.
Post 375 loaded the bases in the third on a walk, infield single and bunt before Wade Hauser stroked a two-run single and Tim Romley tied the game by stealing third and racing home on an errant throw. Matt Jost followed with an RBI single and Colin Byrne made his second at-bat of the inning a big one with a two-out, two-run single for a 6-3 lead.
Palo Alto used four hits and four walks to higlight its six-run seventh, with Romley providing a bases-loaded triple as the key hit.
