With strong pitching leading the way, Menlo Park Chevron took the Palo Alto Babe Ruth 14 and 15-year-old City Championship Tournament, defeating In2Change 3-2 Wednesday evening at Baylands Athletic Center.
Menlo Park Chevron starter Curly Kadash pitched a complete game, only allowing six hits as his mix of fastballs and curveballs baffled In2Change hitters.
Kadash pitched especially strong early in the game, not allowing a hit until the fourth inning.
Offensively, Menlo Park Chevron jumped on In2Change early, scoring twice in top of the first. Leadoff hitter Ozzie Braff drew a walk and B.J. Boyd doubled, moving Braff to third. Kadash helped his own cause with a sacrifice fly to centerfield, scoring Braff, while Boyd came around to score on a steal of home.
In2Change brought the game within one in the fourth inning when Jordan Winawer got his team's first hit of the game and later scored on a ground out to second by Nick Wells.
Menlo Park Chevron momentarily moved back into a two-run lead in the six with what proved to be the winning run of the game. Cam Winn got to third base with one out after being hit by a pitch. Braff then hit a chopper to third base and in a play at the plate, Winn's slide jarred the ball free from catcher Ryan Teranishi.
However, Nick Wells hit an RBI single, scoring Miles Sturken in the home half of the inning, cutting Menlo Park Chevron's lead back to one.
Kadash went back out to the mound in the bottom of the seventh and despite allowing Austin Poore to reach third base, Kadash was able to induce a ground ball to Braff to end the game.
