The only girls' basketball team in the history of the CIF Division V state championships to win three straight titles is Menlo School. Branson, winner of the past two state crowns, will not have that opportunity.
Instead of No. 1 seed Branson playing next week for a state crown, it will be No. 2 Pinewood, which pulled a 41-30 "upset" in the CIF NorCal Division V finals on Saturday at Folsom High.
The Panthers (31-4) now will have the opportunity to win more Division V state titles than any other team in history when they take on SoCal champion Bell-Jeff on Friday at ARCO Arena in Sacramento at 3:30 p.m. Bell-Jeff, the No. 1 SoCal seed, eliminated No. 3 View Park with a 61-49 victory on Saturday.
Pinewood will be seeking its fourth state title in Division V. The Panthers won their first in 1999 before winning back-to-back crowns in 2005 and '06. The only current player who previously played on a state championship team is senior Lindsay Nickel, a freshman on the '06 squad.
Pinewood now has a chance to surpass Menlo School as the winningest Division V state champion. In previous years, the Panthers won with their offense. This season, Pinewood's defense has made a big defense. The 30 points given up to Branson was the team's best defensive performance in a crucial game this season.
