Castilleja won its ninth consecutive Senior Night and clinched second place in the West Bay Athletic League (Foothill Division) with a 56-52 victory over visiting Mercy-San Francisco on Friday night. The Gators improved to 7-3 in league (18-6 overall).

The Skippers came ready to prove that their 30-point loss to Castilleja weeks ago was an aberration and found themselves in a nip-and-tuck game with the score tied at 24 at halftime. The Gators did all they could to pull away from Mercy, building a six-point lead going into the final frame. Castilleja eventually pushed the lead to nine with five minutes left, but the Skippers refused to quit.

Mercy pulled to within two in the final minute after Castilleja senior Ericka von Kaeppler (11 points, 11 rebounds, eight blocks) fouled out with 2 1/2 minutes remaining. Clutch free throws from senior Laura Martinez (six points) and junior Eve Zelinger (19 points, eight assists, three steals) salvaged the game for Castilleja. Senior Natalie Vais recorded new career highs in the victory with six points, three assists, and a block.

Zelinger hit her 500th career field goal in the game, joining Mika Peterman as the only other player in school history with 500 career baskets. Ericka von Kaeppler recorded her 40th career double-double while sophomore Natasha von Kaeppler became the fastest player in school history to 500 career rebounds, reaching that total in only 49 games.

Castilleja will host a second-round WBAL playoff game this week.
