As long as the Eastside Prep girls have been playing basketball, they have never lost a league game. That amazing streak continued into its 12th year on Tuesday night with a 52-51 overtime victory over visiting Castilleja in a West Bay Athletic League (Foothill Division) opener.
The Panthers (1-0, 10-5) previously competed in the Christian Private Schools Athletic League, where they never lost in league play -- including playoffs. That league was disbanded when Eastside joined the new WBAL along with Sacred Heart Prep and Pinewood, making it one of the strongest leagues around for girls' basketball.
Ironically, it was Castilleja coach Jez McIntosh, the WBAL commissioner, who formed the new league for that very purpose -- stronger competition. The Gators (0-1, 8-3) got what they expected from on Tuesday, but certainly didn't help themselves.
Castilleja turned the ball over 24 times while suffering its second straight one-point loss. The Gators had 24 turnovers in that setback, too. Tuesday's loss ended Castilleja's 14-game WBAL winning streak and marked the first time in school history that the Gators lost consecutive one-point games.
Shayla Bunch made a free throw to complete a three-point play with 12.4 seconds left in overtime to lead Eastside Prep to victory. Out of timeouts, Castilleja pushed the ball upcourt quickly but Eve Zelinger's jumper missed. Teammate Ericka von Kaeppler grabbed her 21st rebound, the second most in school history, but her putback rattled in and out. The miss, however, went off an Eastside player, giving the Gators one more shot with 1.2 seconds left -- but von Kaeppler's shot went long as the game ended.
Sophomore guard Ahjalee Harvey led Eastside with 16 points while junior Felicia Anderson added 14. Castilleja sophomore Natasha von Kaeppler topped her team with 17, including a layup with 16 seconds left in regulation that forced overime. Ericka von Kaeppler added 15 points and seven blocks. Her 21 rebounds gives her 33 double-doubles in her career, a school record.
