The Pinewood girls' basketball team staked its claim, perhaps, as to being the early favorite in the West Bay Athletic League race with a 50-49 win over Castilleja in the finals of the Palo Alto Challenge on Tuesday night at Palo Alto High.
Castilleja (8-2), the defending champ in the WBAL, had its eight-game winning streak snapped while the Panthers (9-3) won their second straight Palo Alto Challenge.
Despite never leading after the first quarter, Castilleja had a shot to win the game but Eve Zelinger's halfcourt heave didn't fall as the final buzzer sounded. Castilleja jumped out to an early 11-6 advantage, but was quickly overtaken as Pinewood closed the quarter an 8-0 run.
Castilleja remained in the game throughout the second quarter and trailed by only two heading into the second half. The third quarter saw
the two teams combine for only 14 points as Pinewood added two points to its halftime advantage.
Castilleja opened the fourth quarter with sophomore Natasha von Kaeppler pulling the Gators to within three with a spectacular three-point play. She finished with a game-high 24 points. Pinewood responded by again going on an 8-0 run and looked to be in control leading 44-33 with just under four minutes left.
Castilleja still did not go away as the Gators withstood the fullcourt press applied by the Panthers and got
layup after layup. Zelinger pulled the Gators to within three with Castilleja's only three-point field goal of the game with just over a minute left.
Castilleja then came up with another defensive stop and pulled to within one on a putback by von Kaeppler with 12 seconds left as the Gators finished the game on a 16-6 run.
Castilleja, a few fouls short of the penalty, had to foul Pinewood multiple times before putting the Panthers at the free-throw line with 3.4 seconds left. A Pinewood miss was rebounded by Castilleja and Zelinger tossed a halfcourt shot at the buzzer but missed off the backboard.
