In a well played game on a blustery afternoon, Gunn traveled to Pioneer for a first round CCS Division II playoff game against the host Pioneer Mustangs of the Mt. Hamilton League and came away with a 3-2 win. Gunn pushed their record to 20-8, while Pioneer fell to 14-11.
Gunn Senior Ryan Gorman got the start, and fell behind 2-0 in the bottom of the third inning, giving up RBI singles in both the second and third innings. Gorman allowed the 2 earned runs on 6 hits, with 3 strike outs, pushing his record to 9-0 on the season.
Offensively, the Titans put together one big inning in top of the 6th. Gorman helped himself with a one out single. Senior Jake Verhulp then had an RBI triple to score Gorman. Senior Ryan Teranishi then hit an RBI single to right, scoring Verhulp. Teranishi then advanced to second on a wild pitch. Following an intentional 2 out walk to senior Graham Fisher, Teranishi advanced to third on a fielder’s choice by junior Kevin Sharp. Teranishi scored what amounted to the winning run on a grounder put in play by frosh Matthew Sandor, which bounced over the shortstop’s head.
Gorman shut down Pioneer the rest of the way, putting them down in order in the 4th, giving up a two-out single in the 5th, again putting them down in order in the 6th, and giving up a lone two-out double in the 7th. On the season, Gorman has pitched 69 innings, with 48 strikeouts, limiting the opponents to a .222 batting average, and a 2.03 ERA.
The next game will be 11:00 Saturday, May 19, at Hartnell Junior College in Salinas.
