To achieve an undisputed El Camino Division Championship, Gunn won a 4-3 nail biter against the visiting Cupertino Pioneers on Senior Day. The Titans won the league with a record of 11-4, and 19-8 overall. Cupertino fell to 3-11 in league, and 8-15 overall.
Undefeated senior righthander Ryan Gorman pitched his fifth complete game win of the season, pushing his record to 8-0 overall. Despite the extremely warm afternoon, Gorman allowed 3 runs, 2 earned, on 5 Pioneer hits, on a total of 109 pitches. With the exception of the final Milpitas game, any game this season where he pitched over 5 innings, he got the win.
Offensively, the recently cool Titan bats remained so, mustering only 4 hits on the afternoon. Junior Kevin Sharp had 2 singles, one RBI, and scored once. For the third time this season, senior Jake Verhulp lead off the game with a triple and scored. Fellow senior Graham Fisher added an RBI double, stole second, and kept on going to score when the throw down to second behind him got away from the covering shortstop.
Following the game, Gunn Head Coach John Harney said “I am extremely pleased that we won the El Camino Division title outright, especially with this great group of kids.”
The Titans now wait to see whom and where they will play in the CCS playoffs next Wednesday, May 15.
