Making the late morning trek to Sacred Heart to take on the Gators, Gunn struck early, batting around the order in the top of the 1st inning and scoring 5 runs. Good defense and pitching was then enough for a 6-0 shutout win. Gunn’s record goes to 15-5, while Sacred Heart dropped to 12-8-1.
The Gunn offense was led by senior Jake Verhulp, who stroked a first pitch triple to the right field corner. With an RBI scoring sacrifice fly to center by freshman Matthew Sandor, the Titans were off to the races. The icing on the cake was a 2 out, 2 RBI triple by senior Charlie Smith. On the day, Verhulp was 2 for 4, with a triple and two runs scored. Senior Graham Fisher was the other Titan with 2 hits, both singles, with an RBI sacrifice fly and one score.
For the third time in 4 games and fourth time in 8 games, the Gunn defense committed no errors. Fisher threw his first complete game shutout, giving up 6 hits on a total of 80 pitches.
Over their ten game winning streak, the Titans’ offense and pitching have been quite effective. Offensively, they are hitting .341 in the streak vs. .291 on the season. The pitching staff’s ERA is 2.1 runs per game during the streak vs. 2.45 for the season, and limiting the opposition to a .192 average during the streak, vs. .218 for the season.
Gunn returns to action 3:30 Monday, April 23, at Burlingame in a make-up game.
