In beating the visiting Harker on Friday afternoon, 14-0, in a tuneup for the second half of SCVAL El Camino Division play, Gunn exhibited good team pitching and flawless defense. The Titans won their seventh straight game while improving to 12-5.
Offensively, Gunn continued swinging the bats, racking up 10 hits for the second straight game, and the third double-digit hits game in a row. Senior Graham Fisher led the way, going 3-for-4, with a double, five RBI, a stolen base, and two scores. Senior Ryan Gorman went 1-for-3, with a two-run 2 double plus a walk, scoring twice. Unheralded senior outfielder Ramsey Salah-Mars went 1-for-2, with a walk, two hit-by-pitches, a stolen base, and two runs scored. Senior catcher Scott Ziebelman went 1-for-3, with a walk, and scored twice.
It was a team effort on the mound for the Titans. Fisher, after a long layoff dealing with tendinitis in his left knee, got the start and went five hitless innings, striking out 10, allowing two walks, and pushing his record to 1-1 on the season. In a baseball oddity, Fisher got four straight strikeouts in the fifth inning, including one on a dropped third strike, which enabled the batter to advance to first base. Junior Kevin Sharp went one scoreless, hitless inning in relief. Gorman, in an unusual mop-up role, allowed the lone Harker hit, but also had two strike outs. Behind the solid pitching, the defensive gave up no errors for the second time this season.
The second half of league play starts Tuesday as first-place Gunn hosts the second-place Monta Vista Matadors, with first pitch scheduled for 3:30.
