The Titans traveled to defeat Half Moon Bay Monday 16-11 in a slugfest, and returned home Tuesday to defeat Lynbrook in what was technically a home game for Lynbrook 6-2. Gunn pushed its record to 9-5 overall, and 5-2 in El Camino Division play. Half Moon Bay dropped to 3-8-1, while Lynbrook dropped to 3-7 overall, and 1-4 in league play.
At Half Moon Bay, 7 different Titans had hits, for a season high total of 13. Senior Graham Fisher broke out of a slump, going 3 for 5 on the day, including his third homer of the season, and two doubles, with 4 RBIs and 3 runs scored. Senior Ryan Teranishi went 3 for 3 on the day, with 3 RBIs, 3 runs scored, and 3 stolen bases. Senior Ryan Gorman went 2 for 2 with a double, 1 RBI, and 1 run scored. Fabulous freshman Matthew Sandor broke out of his own slump with a third inning triple.
On the mound, it was pitching by committee for the Titans, with senior righthanded spot starter Jon Wong getting the start. Wong went 3.2 innings, giving up 3 earned runs on 5 hits. Senior lefty reliever Charlie Smith came on to shut down a Cougar rally in the bottom of the 4th. Smith went two innings, allowing 4 earned runs on 4 hits, picking up his 2nd win of the season against 1 loss. Junior righthander Kevin Sharp closed out the game for Gunn.
Tuesday, Gunn returned home to face the Vikings of Lynbrook. Due to the reconstruction of the Lynbrook diamond, this was considered a home game for Lynbrook. The weather started off acceptably, with the occasional rain drop. But by the 4th, it was rumored among the fans that the animals were assembling in pairs beyond the left field fence. By the end of the game, the home plate area and mound were in a world of hurt, providing the pitchers of both teams significant frustration.
Due to Lynbrook being the home team, the Titans were first up, and went down 1-2-3. In the top of the 3rd, Gunn loaded the bases with 1 out. Teranishi had an RBI walk, and Sharp had an RBI ground out. In the top of the 5th, with 2 runs already in, Fisher hit his second homer in as many days, and 4th of the season, with Sharp aboard, to push the Titan lead to an insurmountable 6-1.
Senior centerfielder Jake Verhulp had 2 hits on the day, scoring once. Senior optimist David Oyer had his best day this season with two hits, including 1 run scored, but unfortunately sprained his ankle trying to stretch a single into a double. Junior Chris Rea also had 2 hits, including a double. Fisher also had a double to close out his 2 hit day.
Junior righthander Rea started for Gunn, throwing his second complete game win in a row. Rea was around the strike zone on every pitch, and didn’t let 5 errors behind him take any toll, giving up 2 runs, 1 earned, on 4 singles. Rea upped his record to 2-1.
Over the two games, Teranishi went 3 for 5, with 4 runs scored, 4 RBIs, 3 walks, and 3 stolen bases. Rea went 3 for 7, with 3 runs scored, a double, and an RBI. Fisher went 5 for 9, with 2 homers, 3 doubles, 6 RBIs, and 4 runs scored.
Gunn will put its 4 game winning streak on the line Thursday, this time officially hosting Lynbrook. First pitch is scheduled for 3:30.
