In El Camino division action Thursday afternoon at Fremont, Gunn took the second game from the Firebirds in as many tries, this time 7-3. The Titans record goes to 7-5 overall, and 4-2 in league play, while Fremont drops to 3-10 and 2-2.
Senior centerfielder Jake Verhulp was dominant at the plate. To finally get the Titans going in the top of the 3rd inning, Verhulp hit a 3 run homer, which gave Gunn the lead for good. Verhulp followed up with 2 RBI singles and a sacrifice bunt. On the day, Verhulp ended up 3 for 4, with 5 RBI’s, 1 run scored, and a stolen base. Junior Kevin Sharp also contributed three singles and an RBI.
The Gunn pitching staff continued their dominance. Over the past 5 games, they have given up a total of 3 earned runs, equating to a staff ERA of .62. Thursday, senior righty Ryan Gorman likewise continued his fine pitching, going 6 innings and giving up 1 earned run and 4 Firebird singles in the process. Gorman pushed his undefeated record to 4-0. Righthander Sharp efficiently closed out Fremont 1-2-3 in the bottom of the 7th.
Gunn has the weekend off, and travels to Half Moon Bay Monday for a 4:00 first pitch, before a 2 game series at home against Lynbrook (whose field is under renovation) Tuesday and Thursday.
