For the third time in as many weeks (and on Tuesday afternoons), Gunn took the opening game in a home- and-home series against an El Camino Division opponent. This time it was against Fremont, defeating the Firebirds, 7-1, at Gunn. The Titans pushed their record to 6-5 overall, and 3-2 in league, while Fremont’s record went to 3-9, and 2-1.
In what could almost be called the Chris Rea story, junior righthander Chris Rea, youngest of the baseball playing Rea family, gave up one unearned run on two hits in a complete-game gem. He evened his record at 1-1 on the season.
At the plate, Rea helped his own cause by going 2- for-2, with an RBI and a run scored. Batterymate Ben Sampson, also a junior, likewise had two hits on the day, plus an RBI and a run scored. The eight hits by the Titans -- all singles -- were the most by Gunn in two weeks, since a losing effort at home to Milpitas on March 8.
In a rematch, Gunn travels to Sunnyvale on Thursday for a 3:30 first pitch, in an attempt to take 2 of 2 from one opponent.
