Gunn defeated visiting Cupertino, 4-0, denying the Pioneers the opportunity to win in their inaugural SCVAL El Camino Division baseball game on Thursday after moving down from the De Anza Division last year. The Titans pushed their record to 5-4 overall, and 2-1 in league, while the Pioneers record went to 4-3 overall, and 0-1.
Senior righthander Ryan Gorman got the complete- game shutout victory, limiting Cupertino to just four hits while striking out six on a total of 88 economic pitches. The last complete-game shutout for the Titans was also by Gorman, 367 days ago, a 10-0 victory at home over Fremont in six innings.
Gunn parlayed a meager offensive afternoon, with only four hits, into their four runs. Senior centerfielder Jake Verhulp once again led the charge, with two hits, an RBI, a run scored, and, perhaps most importantly, four stolen bases. Senior outfielder Ryan Teranishi had a single, as did Gorman.
Gunn next takes the diamond at 3:30 p.m. on Friday at Cupertino, in the makeup game of Tuesday’s rain- canceled affair. Saturday, Gunn travels to Burlingame for a nonleague contest, starting at 1 p.m.
