In the second round of the Tim Kuehnert Memorial Baseball tournament Tuesday afternoon, Gunn came from behind to tie the game in the top of the sixth at Menlo Atherton, but couldn’t pull out the victory. Gunn’s record dropped to 2-1, and MA’s record climbed to 2-1.
As in their first two games, the Titans seemed to be reading the same script, coming from behind, but this time they ended up just a little short. Senior Graham Fisher hit a solo, two out home run in the top of the 6th inning to tie it at 1, but MA came back with an insurmountable 3 runs in the bottom of the 6th to win going away.
Senior Ryan Gorman got his first start of the season, and was his usual workmanlike self, giving up but one run on one hit in 4 innings of work. Senior Charlie Smith came on in relief, got his first work of the season, and generally got ahead of the Bear batters, but unfortunately took the loss, his record now 0-1.
Offensively, the Titans managed 5 hits to the Bears' 4. In addition to the Titans’ first homer of the year from Fisher, junior Ben Sampson had an RBI single in the top of the 7th, scoring senior Ryan Teranishi. But the Gunn rally fizzled there.
The Kuehnert Tourney continues Thursday at 3:15, as the Titans travel to Woodside in a rematch of Gunn’s 7-5 victory February 21 at home. MA travels across El Camino to take on Menlo School.
