In opening the 2012 Tim Kuehnert Memorial Baseball tournament at Menlo School, Gunn used timely hitting and a pair of junior pitchers, Chris Rea and Kevin Sharp, to defeat the Knights in their season opening game Saturday afternoon. Gunn ran their record to 2-0, while Menlo dropped to 0-1.
The Knights jumped to a 2-0 scoring a single run in the 1st and 3rd innings, but the Titans rallied for 3 runs in the top of the 4th. Gunn never trailed again, scoring 2 in the 5th, 3 in the 6th, and 1 in the 7th. Menlo scored a run in the 5th and 6th innings.
Rea went 3 innings, giving up 2 runs on 2 hits. Sharp came on in the 4th to get his first win (1-0), giving up 2 runs on 4 hits. Senior Jake Batchelder of Menlo went 5 innings, throwing 120 pitches and allowing 5 runs on just 3 Titan hits.
Offensively, Gunn was led by Rea, with a 2 RBI double. Senior Ryan Teranishi had 1 hit, scoring 3 runs. Fellow senior Graham Fisher had an RBI single and scored a run. Menlo was led by Batchelder, who had 2 hits and an RBI, and sophomore Mikey Diekroger, who scored twice.
The Kuehnert Tourney continues Tuesday at 3:15, as the Knights host Woodside, and Gunn travels to Menlo Atherton.
