Gunn opened its 2012 baseball season at home with a 7-5 nonleague triumph over Woodside on Tuesday. The Titans fell behind 5-0 going to the bottom of the fifth inning before erupting for six runs, five with two outs. The Titans had five hits in the inning, and nine for the game.
Senior Graham Fisher got the start, and gave up four runs, three earned. After two-plus innings, senior Ryan Gorman came on in relief -- pitching four innings, giving up one unearned run, striking out six and generally shutting the Wildcats down. Junior Kevin Sharp, in his inaugural varsity game, got the save, facing the minimum three Woodside batters in the top of the seventh. Senior Scott Ziebelman managed the pitchers well from behind the dish.
Offensively, Sharp lead the charge with a two-run triple in the Titans’ big fifth inning. Fisher went 2-for-3, with a double, scoring once. Senior Ryan Teranishi went 2-for-4, with 2 RBI, scoring once. Junior Chris Rea, also starting his first varsity game, started the two-out rally in the fifth, going 2-for-4 on the day, scoring once.
The Titans return to action at Menlo School on Saturday for the Tim Kuehnert Memorial Tournament at 11 a.m.
