First-place Castilleja saw its lead dwindle after a 47-44 loss to second-place Harker in West Bay Athletic League (Skyline Division) basketball action Tuesday. The Gators (5-2, 10-10) overcame a 13-point halftime deficit, but couldn't pull off the victory.
Castilleja grabbed a 44-42 lead after outscoring the Eagles, 17-3, but Harker (5-3, 12-8) tied the game on a layup and had the ball in the final seconds. Harker guard Daniza Rodriguez appeared to commit a backcourt violation, but it wasn't whistled. She went on to score the final three points on a layup and free throw to finish with a game-high 24 points.
Castilleja drove the length of the floor in the final four seconds, but a desperation three-pointer didn't fall. The Gators were led by freshman Yasmeen Afifi with 15 points and 10 rebounds. It was her fourth career double-double.
Lauren Rantz became the 12th player in Castilleja history to reach 400 career points after tallying 10 while freshman Paige Vermeer added 11 points, five steals and four assists.
