The Gunn girls' basketball team pulled off one of the biggest upsets of the season by handing host Wilcox its first loss of the season, 43-37, in SCVAL De Anza Division action on Friday night in Santa Clara. The victory created a two-way tie for the top spot between the Chargers and Palo Alto, both 6-1, while the Titans moved to 5-2 and put themselves in position to join the leaders with a game against Paly on Wednesday. The Vikings then will host Wilcox on Feb. 3.
Gunn and Wilcox (16-1) battled evenly through three quarters and were tied at 28 heading into the final quarter. Gunn's Claire Klausner made all four of her free throws in the final minute to help the Titans pull off the upset. Gunn out-rebounded Wilcox, 33-21, with the Titans' Cat Perez pulling down 12 boards and freshman Megan Mahoney grabbing six. Gunn also out-shot the Chargers, 47 percent to 25 percent from the field and held 6-foot-2 Wilcox standout Joesetta Fatuesi to just five points. Emily Redfield had her best game of the season for Gunn with 13 points and five rebounds.
