Senior forward Israel Hakim scored 22 points to lead Palo Alto to a 51-48 SCVAL De Anza Division boys' basketball win over visiting Mountain View Friday night. The victory moved the Vikings (6-1, 16-2) into a tie for first place as Mountain View fell to 6-1 (15-4 overall). The Vikings ended the Spartan’s eight-game win streak, but were lucky to do it in regulation.
Hakim set the table early for the Vikings as he scored 13 points in the first half alone. Junior guard Mathias Schmutz hit a three-point buzzer-beater to put Paly up 27-20 at the end of the first half. Mountain View took the lead only once when senior forward Dylan Collins hit a three-pointer to put the Spartans up 39-38 early in the fourth quarter. The Vikings took advantage of two turnovers by Spartan guard Nick Wang and went on an 8-0 run late in the fourth quarter.
The Spartans got the ball back with 11.7 seconds left and had a chance to tie it, but senior guard James Watanabe missed an open look three-pointer as time expired.
