Whatever success the Gunn boys' basketball team has this season evidently will depend on the defense the Titans play if Monday's 39-36 nonleague victory over host Westmont is any indication. Gunn scored 17 points in the first quarter but only one in the second and trailed, 19-18 at halftime. The second half produced only a combined 38 points, which saw the Titans allow just five points in the final quarter. Senior Shang Yip scored a team-high 11 points for Gunn, which will play its home opener on Wednesday against Mt. Pleasant at 7 p.m.
