Travis McHugh rushed for 208 yards on 20 carries and scored three touchdowns to pace No. 2 Bellarmine Prep to a 41-13 victory over No. 4 Palo Alto in the Central Coast Section Open Division football championship game on Friday night at San Jose City College.
McHugh, who as a 14-year-old helped the Palo Alto Babe Ruth all-stars reach the World Series, was a one-man wrecking crew as he accounted for four touchdowns, punted and kicked off as the Bells improved to 12-1 and likely clinched a berth in the CIF Division I state bowl game.
Palo Alto (10-3), which won the state title in Division I last season, had no answer for the Bells' option offense or tough defense, which limited Vikings' sophomore quarterback Keller Chryst to 119 yards on 6-of-23 passing. His receivers, however, dropped seven passes. One that wasn't dropped went to senior wideout B.J. Boyd for a 48-yard TD in the fourth quarter. Boyd also had a 98-yard kickoff return in the first quarter to give the Vikings a brief 7-6 lead.
Before Boyd caught his TD pass, the Bells punched in a one-yard touchdown run with 9:19 left in the game. The Bells took a 34-7 lead in the third quarter when Tim Crawley ran 23 yards for a touchdown.
McHugh scored on runs of four and 20 yards and threw a 12-yard scoring pass -- all in the second quarter -- to give the Bells a 27-7 halftime lead. McHugh's 54-yard run in the first quarter made it a 6-0 game.
