The Palo Alto girls' volleyball team had to earn its latest SCVAL De Anza Division title by battling from the brink of defeat to pull out a 25-12, 19-25, 18-25, 25-19, 15-11 victory over host Los Gatos on Tuesday night. The Wildcats (8-2 league) needed a victory to delay the Vikings' sixth straight division title celebration as Paly improved to 11-0 in league (29-3 overall) with only Thursday's road match against Gunn remaining in the regular season. Los Gatos was the only team to defeat Paly last season when the Vikings went 41-1 and captured the CIF Division I state title.
Paly's Maddie Kuppe had a career-high 29 kills with 12 digs and fellow senior Melanie Wade added 25 kills, six blocks and four aces. Senior Caroline Martin had 15 digs and three aces, junior Shelby Knowles added 13 digs while senior Kimmy Whitson had a season-high 53 assists to go with four kills and four blocks.
