In a battle between two defending California state champions, 2010 CIF Division II champ St. Francis handed Division I champ and host Palo Alto a 3-2 nonleague girls' volleyball loss on Monday night in the Vikings' gym, 25-20, 28-26, 19-25, 22-25, 15-8. Maddie Kuppe had 10 kills and teammate Kimmy Whitson provided 42 assists for Palo Alto, which fell to 15-3 after going 41-1 last season.
