A century in cloth

Exhibit of Israeli quilts depicts the history of the kibbutz system

The kibbutz movement in Israel began as a cooperative, rural dream. A century ago, pioneering Zionists began to form what they saw as true communities: sharing the farm work and the child-raising, the responsibilities and the income. The classic image of a kibbutznik depicts someone in a work shirt and a sun hat, picking fruit, cooking huge meals, teaching in the communal kindergarten.
