SPECTACULAR GARDENS ... UCCE Master Gardeners of San Mateo and San Francisco counties are sponsoring the 2011 Educational Garden Tour on Saturday, June 18, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., including seven gardens from Burlingame to Redwood City. Master Gardeners will be at each garden, offering advice on irrigating, composting, plant selection, lawn alternatives and growing fruits and vegetables. BACKYARD CHICKENS ... Garden writer Jody Main, who has raised backyard chickens in her organic vegetable and herb gardens for years, will teach a class on "Backyard Chickens" on Saturday, June 18, from 2 to 5 p.m. The class meets at Common Ground, 559 College Ave., Palo Alto, then carpools to Main's garden and hen house in Woodside. Main will talk about setting up a hen house and yard, nesting boxes, caring for chicks and favorite crops to grow for chickens. Cost is $31 plus a $7 materials fee. MATCHBOX ART ... Kit Davey, interior designer and Palo Alto Weekly columnist, will teach a class on "Matchbox Art" on Wednesday, June 22, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Greendell P6, 4120 Middlefield Road, Palo Alto. Participants will learn to make mini-shrines, jewelry, books, dolls, cards and more. Cost is $35 plus $7 materials fee payable to instructor in class. IMPROVE EFFICIENCY ... GreenPoint rater Suzanne Emerson will lead a workshop to "Improve Your Home's Energy Efficiency" on Thursday, June 23, from 6 to 9 p.m. in the Lucie Stern Community Center Fireside Room, 1305 Middlefield Road, Palo Alto. GARDEN DESIGN ... David Stevens will teach a class on "Modern Garden Design and Planting" on Saturday, June 25, from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at Filoli, 86 Canada Road, Woodside. The class will cover analysis of different design styles, linking interior and exterior spaces, and will include an extensive tour of Filoli's gardens. Cost is $150 for nonmembers, $125 for members.
