RAINWATER HARVESTING ... Acterra is offering a class on "Rainwater Harvesting and Rain Barrel Building" on Saturday, Jan. 29, from noon to 3 p.m. at a location near Ohlone School (exact address to be sent after registration). Come prepared to get dirty while learning about the parts and tools needed to construct a single or multi-barrel system. GREYWATER YOUR YARD ... Roy Nordblom III, an early green builder, sustainable construction consultant and trainer, will teach a class on how to "Greywater Your Yard" on Sunday, Jan. 30, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Dana Center, near the entrance to Hidden Villa, 26870 Moody Road, Los Altos Hills. Participants will learn how to re-use their washing-machine water and help construct a mulch basin. Bring working shoes and gloves. Cost is $75. Information: 650-949-9704 or www.hiddenvilla.org.

WINTER DINNER ... Cookbook author and teacher Lou Pappas will offer "A Festive Winter Dinner at Gamble" on Sunday, Jan. 30, from 5 to 7:30 p.m. at Gamble Garden, 1431 Waverley St., Palo Alto. The participation-style cooking class will include Jack Graf 's Special Bread, hummus with crudités, citrus and greens salad, lemon and olive lamb stew, couscous, and pear and apple cranberry crisp. MANAGE A REMODEL ... Mollyanne Sherman will show "How to Manage Your Kitchen or Bath Remodel" on five Tuesdays, Feb. 1 to March 1, from 6:30 to 9 p.m. at Palo Alto High School, Room 1706, 50 Embarcadero Road, Palo Alto. Certified in kitchen, bath and interior design as well as green building, Sherman will talk about how to construct a project budget and schedule, and how to keep the project under control. VEGGIE GARDENING ... UCCE Master Gardener Candace Simpson will teach a class on "Sustainable Home Vegetable Gardening" on Wednesdays, Feb. 2 to March 9, from 7 to 9 p.m. at Palo Alto High School, Room 1707, 50 Embarcadero Road, Palo Alto. Topics include soil preparation and management of common pests, weeds and diseases, as well as a list of sustainable gardening practices for Santa Clara County vegetables. Cost is $96. PRUNING CLASSES ... Filoli is offering two series of classes on Fruit Tree Espalier and Pruning. Fruit Tree Espalier kicks off with "Part I: The Espalier in Winter" on Friday, Feb. 4, or Saturday, Feb. 5, from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. (and continues with "Training & Taming Your Espalier" on May 20 or 21 and "Summer Pruning, Training & Fruit Development" on July 22 or 23). Cost is $110 for nonmembers, $90 for members. The Pruning series begins with "Fruit Trees I" on Friday, Feb. 4, and "Wisteria I" on Saturday, Feb. 5, each from 1 to 3 p.m. (Future classes in the Friday series are "Rhododendrons" on May 20 and "Fruit Trees II" on July 22; the Saturday series includes "Camellias" on May 21 and "Wisteria II" on July 23). NEW OFFICERS ... E.H. "Gene" Lentz, a Realtor with Red Hawk Real Estate in Menlo Park, was installed as 2011 president of the Silicon Valley Association of Realtors. Phyllis Carmichael, a Realtor with Coldwell Banker in Los Altos, was named treasurer. The 2011 board includes Julia Truesdale Keady (Alain Pinel Realtors, Palo Alto), Region 9 chair; Denise Welsh (Intero Real Estate Services, Los Altos), Los Altos/Mountain View district chair; Penelope Huang (RE/MAX Distinctive Properties, Menlo Park), Menlo Park/Atherton district chair; Nancy Macleod (Homes2Buy.com, Palo Alto), Palo Alto district chair; Judy Ellis (Alain Pinel Realtors, Palo Alto), National Association of REALTORS® Director; and at-large members Alicia Nuzzo (Sereno Group, Los Altos) and Bryan Robertson (Sereno Group, Los Altos), and Jimmy Kang (Wells Fargo Home Mortgage, Palo Alto), affiliate chair.
