WATERS ON WATER ... Roger Waters, owner of Roger Waters Environments that specializes in landscape water management, will discuss "Drought Tolerant Once Established" landscapes on Saturday, Oct. 16, from 10 a.m. to noon at Gamble Garden Center, 1431 Waverley St., Palo Alto. The lecture/demonstration will cover choosing drought-tolerant plants, micro-climates, soil, proper watering techniques and retrofitting an existing irrigation system. BETTER VEGGIES ... Mark House, research-garden assistant manager at the Ecology Action Research Garden in Willits, Calif., will teach a class on "Using the Master Charts" to maximize growing vegetables on Saturday, Oct. 16, from 10:30 a.m. to noon at Common Ground Education Center, 559 College Ave., Palo Alto. Bring a copy of "How to Grow More Vegetables, 7th edition." From 1:30 to 3:30 p.m., he will teach "Seed Collection and Saving." Cost for each class is $31. ON A HIGH NOTE ... The Foothill Auxiliary to Peninsula Family Service will hold its 13th annual "Holidays on a High Note" fundraiser on Monday, Oct. 18, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Menlo Circus Club, 190 Park Lane, Atherton. The highlight of the day is a presentation by Ikebana master Soho Sakai, and the fundraiser will also include holiday table settings, floral displays, a floral auction and a boutique marketplace. FILOLI'S HOLIDAY TRADITIONS ... With a theme of "Visions of Sugarplums Dancing," this year's Holiday Traditions takes place at Filoli from Nov. 26 through Dec. 4. Ticket sales have already begun for members, and will open to nonmembers on Oct. 18. Some events are already sold out. The nine-day event includes a Premiere Access Shopping Evening (Nov. 26) and Evening Dinner Party (Nov. 27), as well as Holiday Boutiques, lunch buffets (Nov. 28-Dec. 2), Bistro in the Cafe (refreshments plus Evening Shopping Boutique, Nov. 28 or Dec. 2) and children's parties (Dec. 4). GREEN DREAM TEAM ... Forrest Linebarger, CEO of Vox Design Group, Mountain View, will talk about "Low Cost Strategies for Building Zero-Energy Homes" on Tuesday, Oct. 19, at 5 p.m. at Kepler's Books, 1010 El Camino Real, Menlo Park. The free talk will deal with designing net-zero houses for the local climate, building them at costs similar to conventional construction, and tax incentives and rebates. RHODIES FROM CHINA ...
