BAY-FRIENDLY BASICS ... Brian Debasitis will teach a "Bay-Friendly Basics" workshop on Saturday, Sept. 25, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Cubberley Community Center, 4000 Middlefield Road, Palo Alto. The workshop focuses on design, maintenance and helpful hints at the nursery. The $20 fee includes a Bay-Friendly Gardening book. ORGANIC FALL GARDENING ... Jody Main, garden writer, educator and consultant, will teach a class on "Organic Fall Gardening" on Saturday, Sept. 25, from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Common Ground Education Center, 599 College Ave., Palo Alto. Class will deal with preparing garden beds, planting and harvesting, from arugula to wildflowers. Samples and recipes will be provided. Cost is $31, plus a $7 materials fee. PESTOS WITH PAPPAS ... Lou Pappas, author of more than 50 cookbooks, will teach a class on "Pestos" on Sunday, Sept. 26, from 5 to 7:30 p.m. at the Gamble Garden Center Carriage House, 1431 Waverley St., Palo Alto. Participants are asked to bring an apron and a pen to this participation class, where they will learn to make Smoked Salmon Dill Pesto Canapes, Mushrooms Baked with Arugula Pesto, Greens with Embellishments, Basil Pesto Chicken Breasts with Tomato Topping, Oregano Pesto Grilled Squash, Sage Pesto New Potatoes and Raspberry Whipped Cream Cheese Tart. PLANT BARGAINS ... The Garden Club of Los Altos will hold a plant and bake sale on Tuesday, Sept. 28, from 11:30 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. at Christ Episcopal Church, 1040 Border Road, Los Altos. INDIAN, THAI COOKING ... Ramesh and Bharti Joshi will teach "Indian Cooking" on Wednesday, Sept. 29, from 6:30 to 9 p.m. Demonstration and sampling will include chicken curry, pullao (rice), puri (fluffy bread), chole (spicy garbanzo beans) and aaloo gobi (potatoes and cauliflower). Yannette Fichou Edwards will offer a "Taste of Thai" on Thursday, Sept. 30, from 6:30 to 9 p.m. Her class includes demonstration, participation and sampling of Thai salad rolls in a spicy peanut sauce, green Thai curry paste with chicken, classic pad Thai noodles and tom yum prawn soup.
