From a field of 256 entries, here are the 16 winners
in the Eighth Annual Palo Alto Weekly Photo Contest
You simply never know when a good photograph is going to present itself. It might happen far from home, such as on a family vacation in Maine or on a sightseeing trip in France, or it may be found in our own back yard at the Palo Alto Duck Pond.
This year's winners in the Eighth Annual Palo Alto Weekly Photo Contest prove the point. The 16 photos on the following pages were taken in locations far and wide--from the desert outside Taos, N.M., to a walkway at Stanford Shopping Center.
Besides featuring such a variety of locations and subjects, this year's contest attracted more entries than in any of the previous years. The winners were selected from 256 candidates shot by 170 photographers.
The contest has four general categories: Peninsula People, Peninsula Images, Views Beyond the Peninsula and Manipulated Images.
First-place winners received $250 and a $100 gift certificate from Photo Time; second-place winners received $150 and a $100 gift voucher from the UC Santa Cruz Extension Art and Design Department; and third-place winners received $100 and a $50 gift certificate from Keeble & Shuchat. Winners in a subcategory, youths 16 years or younger, received a gift certificate of $100 from University Art Center.
The judging was by a four-member committee of distinguished local photographers.
The newspaper reproduction process means that we really cannot do justice to the photographs in the paper. To the award winners, we apologize, but hope the online representation is much better
If you would like to see the winning photos--as well as a few extras we found noteworthy--they will be exhibited at the Palo Alto Art Center, 1313 Newell Road at Embarcadero Road, through June 20. An opening reception for the photographers was held June 1. For exhibition hours, call the Art Center at 329-2366.
