Roger Wilson Lowther
Sept. 7, 1943-Feb. 2, 2017
Palo Alto, California

Roger Wilson Lowther was born September 7, 1943, in Portland, Oregon. As a young child he moved to Reedsport, Oregon, which was his home until he went to college. Roger attended Reedsport Union High School where he was outstanding both athletically and academically. In addition to being named class valedictorian, Roger earned a full National Merit Scholarship to the University of Oregon. In high school he lettered in four sports and went on to play linebacker at the University of Oregon. Roger enjoyed participating in school and community theater where he held lead roles. After college, Roger moved to California and started his career in the Logistics field. He was an executive with several major corporations in his area of expertise, ultimately working for Ernst and Young internationally. His travel took him to many foreign countries, including the former Soviet Union where he lived for some time in conjunction with his work. Roger met the love of his life, Marsha, playing tennis in Hawaii and in a short time fell in love with her and her children, Shannon and Troy. A two year, long distance courtship ended happily with their wedding on Feb. 16, 1985. Words that best describe Roger start with the fact that he loved people. Roger could start a conversation with anyone, which he did frequently. He was a deeply caring, generous, supportive and loving individual, particularly with his family and beloved dog Cooper. As a very proud father and grandfather, his sense of humor created many special moments for everyone. He brought a smile to friends' faces with his affinity for brightly colored running shoes, Stanford gear, colorful shirts and Bermuda shorts in any weather. For the past twenty-five years, Roger endured major health challenges and came to be known to his doctors and friends as the “cat with nine lives.” He always believed he could overcome each major episode concerning his heart and did so with amazing determination, endurance and positive attitude; Roger clearly enjoyed and appreciated life because he could never take it for granted. Though a University of Oregon graduate, Roger lived in the Stanford community for 32 years and became one of Stanford’s most dedicated sports fans. Roger and Marsha welcomed many young people to live in their home including Stanford football players. He was a devoted member of the Stanford Cardinal/Buck Club, Palo Alto Chamber of Commerce and served as President of his Homeowners Association. Roger was preceded in death by his father Richard and mother, Mary Wilson Lowther. He is survived by his wife, Marsha Turvy Lowther; his adult children, Shannon Turvy Calvin (Chris) and Troy Turvy (Rebecca); and his five grandchildren, Matt, Jake, Lily, Ewan and Asa. Roger is also survived by his sister, Linda Dowling (Mike) and five nieces and nephews.
