Menlo Park pumping problems

Residents advised to hire private companies to pump basements

The Menlo Park Fire Protection District had received 300 calls from homeowners with water in their basements by Monday, but firefighters were unable to help, said Division Chief Paul Young.

Young said that his department did not have the capacity to help with pumping water and recommended that residents hire their own pumps instead. He warned, however, that the ground is so saturated right now that some residents have pumped their basement two or three times only to have the water return again.

Young said that there has been substantial erosion damage to properties along San Francisquito Creek, including the candle factory at Allied Arts Guild. Work crews were also shoring up eroded banks with large boulders at Oak Creek Apartments on Sand Hill Road, according to Santa Clara Valley spokesman Mike DiMarco.
