Keeping the lights on: An ongoing report of local power conditions
Uploaded: Wednesday, January 17, 2001 2:50 p.m.

Blackout suspended, could resume at 6 p.m.

The rolling blackout that lasted from noon to 2 p.m. in parts of Palo Alto was suspended at 2 p.m., but is expected to resume at 6 p.m.

The next area of Palo Alto to be affected is part of Stanford Research Park.

For a complete list of the city's rotating power "blocks," showing the order of a rolling blackout, go to the Utility Department Web site at www.cpau.com. There is also a link on the page to determine which block your address is part of.

During rolling blackouts, Palo Altans can also call (650) 496-6914 for areas currently affected. For ongoing updates, check www.cpau.com or call (650) 306-8107.

The state's Independent System Operator, which controls California's power grid, declared a Stage Three alert at 1:45 a.m., with statewide rolling blackouts beginning at noon. A Stage Three alert is declared when statewide power reserves fall below 1.5 percent of capacity.

There was no immediate word on how long the rolling blackouts will last tonight.
