A season that could have turned around and headed in the right direction evidently is not. In fact, whatever momentum the Gunn football team had following its first win of the season a week ago, was lost in a 29-20 SCVAL El Camino Division setback to host Fremont on Friday night.

The Titans (1-3, 1-7) reverted to form while dropping a game that could have gone the other way, especially considering the Titans took a 20-16 lead with six minutes to play.

But as has been the case this season, the Titans were simply outmanned, or in this case, outkicked in the special teams department. While Fremont's kickoffs reached the end zone more times than now, Gunn's efforts came up well short.

After taking the lead, Gunn's kickoff traveled only to Fremont's 45 -- just 20 yards. The Firebirds then used some creative plays to go 55 yards for a touchdown, and then added another one touchdown when a tipped pass was intercepted to set up a late gift touchdown for Fremont.

Gunn had gone ahead when a blocked field-goal attempt was recoved by DeVaughn Campbell. That play set up a touchdown run by Nikko Jackson that gave Gunn its final lead of the game at 20-16.

Josh Jackson gave Gunn a 6-0 lead after a 35-yard run in the first quarter.

Fremont had six kickoffs, of which four were touchbacks. One was returned to the 19-yard line and the other to the 29. Two Fremont punts went inside Gunn's 10-yard line. Contrast that to Gunn kicks that never traveled farther than Fremont's 30, with one short kick being returned 60 yards for a Fremont touchdown that made the score 12-9.

The kickoff return for a touchdown turned out to be a dagger for Gunn. Up to that point the Titans' offense dominated and the defense looked strong. The Titans had just gone 80 yards in three plays with the big run being a 73-yarder by Nikko Jackson that set up a seven-yard touchdown pass from Danny Luskin to David Marson.

That, however, would be the last effective offensive output until Gunn went 40 yards in two plays with Jackson scoring from 20 yards out to give Gunn its final lead. Gunn will host Santa Clara next Friday on Senior Night at 7:30 p.m. Santa Clara topped Lynbrook on Friday, 15-12.
