Hundreds of chili lovers and about 20 chili-cooking teams flocked to Mitchell Park on July 4 for the 27th annual City of Palo Alto Chili Cook-off and Summer Festival.

Winning teams included the Palo Alto Firefighters (People's Choice), Lounge Lizard Chili (Judges' Best Overall), Top Gun Chili (Curtis Berger Spirit Award), Chili Penguins (Vegetarian), Elmo and the Old Quackers (Open Category), and Chiligan's Island (Best Decorated Booth).

Judges included city officials and community volunteers.

Congrats to Lounge Lizards for winning the Overall! We were so thrilled to see Chug-a-lug back again this year and I wanted to say thank you to the City of Palo Alto for immortalizing Curtis Berger by renaming the Spirit Award! It was a great day.

Also... Elmo Chili won the "open division" which is the judges favorite. Lounge Lizards did win overall, but thought we could use the "shout-out!" as well as Chilligans Island for best booth!

Thanks again for putting on this great event. We've been there for 18 years and look forward to many more!

Cheers!

Juliana Piazza, of Piazzas' Fine Foods, is pictured in a black tank top enjoying the 4th of July with friends Janet and Brad. They are in the longest line which is for the Firefighters chili. Which she agrees deserves the Peoples Choice Award. Happy 4th of July!

Dont forget about us! The Chili Penguins came in first in the Veggie category! Just because we dont use meat doesnt mean we dont matter!
