The Stanford women's basketball team let its game against host UCLA get away early and could never recover in a 69-56 setback on Friday night.

California moved into first place in the Pac-10 with Arizona State after beating USC, 57-52. Stanford is in a third-place tie with the Bruins.

The second-ranked Cardinal (2-1, 12-2) hopes to rebound on Sunday when it travels to USC for a 2 p.m. tipoff.

The Bruins took a 17-6 lead in the game's first five minutes. Stanford came back within two just before halftime, but UCLA regained control with a 12-0 run to open the second half.

Stanford senior Candice Wiggins scored 29 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for her first double-double of the season. Sophomore center Jayne Appel added 17 points and eight rebounds. The rest of the team combined scored 10 points.

It was as though the Bruins allowed Wiggins and Appel their fair share and made sure the rest of the team wouldn't beat them. The plan worked.

Wiggins and Appel scored 27 of Stanford's first 29 points before JJ Hones hit a 3-pointer. Hones was the next highest scorer with six points.

Roz Gold-Onwude and Kayla Pedersen each scored two points as Stanford shot under 30 percent as a team. Wiggins and Appel were a combined 21-of-46 while everyone else was 3-of-25.

Pedersen, Jillian Harmon and Jeanette Pohlen were a combined 0-of-14 from the field. Pedersen and Harmon did combine for 22 rebounds.

After the Bruins took a 16-point lead in the second half, Stanford never got closer than seven the rest of the way.

The loss ended Stanford's nine-game winning streak, and likely its lofty ranking.

Wiggins did move into second place on Stanford's all-time scoring list with 2,098 points and added to her career 3-point attempts and made 3-points records. That was, of course, of little solace
