Palo Alto police use dog to arrest wanted man

Bookmark and Share
Palo Alto police tried to arrest Paul Ekins, 21, on an arrest warrant Saturday morning at a College Avenue home but Ekins refused to leave the house so a police dog was used to help capture him, Sgt. Sandra Brown said.

The dog bit Ekins on his leg when Ekins struggled and then bit him on his arm when he struggled with officers after being subdued the first time.

Ekins was given a warning that the dog would be used if he didn't come out, Brown said.

The arrest occurred at 7:30 a.m. in the 1100 block of College Avenue.

Ekins was wanted on a felony arrest warrant for suspicion of possession and sale of narcotics.

Ekins was treated for the dog bites and later booked into jail.

Why do I suddenly have a vision of Palo Alto entering into a settlement with this guy in a few years over allegations of brutality for using a police dog at the time of arrest?

After the dog bit him the first time, they should of use the taser on him the second time the dog bit him. I would hate to see the police dog injured because of this dirt-bag.

And why Midtown Neighborhood citizen do you express absolutely no cocnern for the safety of the officers who are charged with the dangerous responsibility of apprehending a wanted felon. A responsibility that critics like you I am sure would never undertake. You are misguided and out of touch with reality. Please express equal respect for the women and men that protect us.

I am not supporting the felon here - just wondering if its unusual to send in a police dog to make an arrest and commenting on the fact that our police department seems to wind up making a lot of settlements over brutality allegations.

If this is the lowest risk (to the police officers and from a litigation standpoint) way to arrest someone, great. But I don't read many stories where police dogs are biting people until they submit to arrest.

police use dogs to subdue a suspect after repeated warnings and after they have asked the suspect to give up nicely. police dogs attack the person and bite them whenever they are let out onto a person (they do not just sit there and bark "please let them arrest you!". the dogs, once given the command from officers, bites suspects. it's not a question of if the dog will typically bite-- they always do if the officers gives the command to go get the suspect (the dog will stand and bark until the officer gives the command)

What a great story. Brings a smile to my face. I hope the K-9 got a yummy dinner that night. A nice filet mignon or possibly some fois gras? These brave dogs deserve a meat that has 2 words in its name. How about beef wellington?

We fed em well- on that you can be sure!

took em to Macdonalds- burger, fries, and a coke!

dogs just love it- esp. the cocker spaniels-

they might be cute- but their vicious if need be!

A lot of settlements regarding allegations of brutality? Name one other than the obvious settlement I'm sure you are refering too.

I thnik the dog is smarter than Midtown citizen

I hope the dog doesn't get rabies.

For the critic here, I suppose it would be a better idea to have the officers go after someone in a house who has already refused to comply after several warnings. A dangerous felon no less, who might force them into an armed confrontation. I am guessing that the police dog is a safer alternative for everyone involved, including the law breaker. Also, the felon is the one who created the situation by breaking the law and resisting arrest. He should take some responsibility for his life and he wouldn't have to worry about the police or anyone else.

Is this the same Ekins that was on the Stanform Volleyball team last year?

Good for the hero dog. Sending police dogs after suspects who refuse to surrender is standard practice, I think. It saves the officers from danger, although myself I would not risk a splendid animal like that. I guess they could have lobbed tear gas into the house instead.
