Stanford solar car crashes in Australia

Share
A solar-powered car designed and operated by Stanford University students lost its bid to win the World Solar Challenge in Australia yesterday when the car blew a tire, flipped over and wrecked, the Stanford Daily newspaper reported today.

The driver of the car, protected by a roll-cage, was uninjured.

The student-run Stanford Solar Car Project took two years to build its car, Equinox, and 10 students traveled to Australia for the 3,000-kilometer race that began Oct. 21, the newspaper reported.

The project hopes to rebuild the car for the 2009 World Solar Challenge and the 2010 North American Challenge.

While the damage to our car is severe, it should be recoverable. We hope to have Equinox fixed so that we may participate at least in some capacity in the 2008 North American Solar Challenge.

The game of solar car racing, however, is changing considerably after that. New rules are going into effect that make these solar cars a little bit more like traditional vehicles. These new rules present serious new design challenges requiring more volunteer work hours and more money than ever before.

At the moment, we are looking for help with coming up with an innovative new solar concentrator design for the array. There is a whole laundry list of other changes we want to make in order to maximize safety and increase performance. If anybody reading this has some ideas on how to implement this, or where we can secure help or funding for such an ambitious project.

Thanks!

I watched this solar vehicle in action 30kms south of Katherine. It was impressive. How sad they came to grief further on. Hope to see the team get over here next year and complete the race Regards Mickey Bottrell
