Woman sentenced for fatal 2006 crash
Two members of Tongan royal family died in collision on Highway 101

Bookmark and Share
A 19-year-old Redwood City woman convicted of a misdemeanor in causing the deaths of three people, including two members of the Tongan royal family, in a July 2006 crash on U.S. Highway 101 in Menlo Park was sentenced this morning in San Mateo County Superior Court to two years in county jail.

Edith Delgado has already served some of that time in jail.

A jury in June found Delgado guilty of misdemeanor vehicular manslaughter for a July 5, 2006, nighttime crash that occurred when Delgado's white Mustang changed lanes and sideswiped a Ford Explorer carrying Tonga's Prince Tu'ipelehake, 54; Princess Kaimana Tu'ipelehake, 45; and their driver, Vinisia Hefa, 36.

All three were killed when the Explorer lost control and flipped over on the highway.

Prosecutors had sought a felony manslaughter conviction that would have carried a maximum eight-year prison sentence.

This was an overly harsh sentence. The jury found her not guilty of the felony charges. The judge is obviously kow-towing to the Tongan community. She should have been given the time already served and suspended sentence.

The sentence is too lenient in my opinion. People died because a girl thought speeding was cool.

The royalty status of victims is not relevant. Life is life.

A harsh (ahem... just) sentence will help potential speeding teenagers to think twice.
