Caltrain slowed by bicyclist on tracks
|
| Caltrain is experiencing delays of up to 30 minutes this morning following an incident where a train may have clipped a bicycle being carried by a trespasser near the Castro Street Station in Mountain View.
Caltrain service was briefly halted while emergency crews searched for a victim after a train engineer saw a trespasser carrying a bicycle across the tracks and may have clipped the bicycle, according to Caltrain spokesman Jonah Weinberg. The incident took place around 7:30 a.m.
Police and fire officials searched the area but no victim has been located.
"An engineer observed a trespasser running across the tracks with a bicycle and believed the train clipped the bicycle," Weinberg said this morning.
After a brief delay, both tracks were re-opened, although trains are moving at around 10 miles an hour in both directions, a Caltrain customer service representative said.
Weinberg suspects the trespasser was "more afraid of fine or whatever the police would do than about anything else." — Bay City News Service Are you receiving Express, our free daily e-mail edition? See a sample and sign-up for Express.

Posted by hour late to work, a resident of the Meadow Park neighborhood, on Jul 23, 2007 at 2:56 pm CalTrain does a poor job getting trains back on schedule. I was stuck on the Belmont station for 1 hour and saw 3 'express' trains wiz by. Why not make one of those trains pick up the slack and pick stranded passengers on the less frequented stations?!?!
CalTrain needs to review its recovery methods otherwise ridership is going to decline.

I suspect the delay might have more to do with police investigation than CalTrain procedures.

Bicycles have to obey the same laws of traffic as autos do. This means they have to ride in traffic even at 10 mph and not on sidewalks as they are for pedestrians. Sounds as if you need to visit the DMV and retake both the written and hands on driving test.
People like you driving on the road is exactly the reason there are accidents and high insurance premiums. You are such a jack-ass.
