Summer vacation can officially begin for the Palo Alto National 11-12 baseball team, which was eliminated from the District 52 Little League 11-12 all-star tournament Monday night.

Palo Alto, which had won five straight games in the consolation bracket after losing to Hillsborough, faced that same undefeated team in the district championship game at Marina Field in Belmont. And, like in the first game, the results were similar as Palo Alto dropped an 8-4 decision to end its postseason.

Hillsborough had won the first meeting, 9-3.

"They beat us by similar scores in both games," said Palo Alto manager Todd Lewis. "So, they deserved it. They were the better team. We hope they go on to the next tournament and do well."

Hillsborough blasted four home runs, which accounted for all eight runs. Palo Alto smacked two out of the park, accounting for three runs.

Two of Hillsborough's homers, however, were three-run pokes. The first one came in the first inning by winning pitcher Matt Krook. That was followed by a solo homer in the next at-bat by Joe Holmes, giving Hillsborough a 4-0 lead.

Palo Alto battled back with a solo homer from Alec Wong in the second and a two-run blast by Austin Poore in the third. That brought Palo Alto to within 5-3 and gave National some hope.

In the bottom of the fourth, however, Nick Waldsmith of Hillsborough crushed a three-run homer over the right-field fence for an 8-3 lead.

"That last homer really hurt," Lewis said.

Kirby Gee came off the bench and stroked an RBI double in the fifth, but Palo Alto went down in order in the sixth as Hillsborough claimed its second district title in three years.

Sure was a fun run. I wish the season could have gone on longer though.

Great group of kids, fun group of parents/friends/relatives, and an excellent series of extremely entertaining games. Thanks to all.

Sounds like Little League had a wonderful season and now it has ended. Just wondering why the banners have been put back up at Middlefield and there seems to be activity?

Anybody?

The Section 3 10-11 All Star tournament will be held in Palo Alto, even though neither PA All Star team won District. It will run July 19th through the 25th.

Here is the tournament bracket: Web Link

Stop by at least for the food! The wonderful family that hosts the snack bar during the regular season will be there, cooking up a storm. It was great to see them cheering on the various PA All-Star teams during the district tournaments.
