A memorial service marking the one-year anniversary of the shooting death of East Palo Alto Police Officer Richard May will be held Saturday. May was shot and killed by a man he was chasing Jan. 7, 2006.

The memorial service will be at 1:30 p.m. at St. Francis of Assisi Church, 1425 Bay Road, East Palo Alto. A choir will sing as part of the service.

After May was shot, some 250 officers from 10 police agencies flooded the area near Weeks Street and University Avenue, where May had been shot.

Police searching cars leaving the area arrested Alberto Alvarez, now 24, about 12 hours later hiding in the backseat of a car. Alvarez, a member of the Sacramento Street gang, was arrested and charged with May's murder. He has not yet gone to trial.

May, 38, had been with the East Palo Alto Police Department for about 18 months after serving for 12 years on the Lompoc (Calif.) department. He is survived by his wife, Diana May, and three daughters.
