Ipsen dives to yet another victory at NCAA meet
|
Kristian Ipsen has made a habit out of winning both the 1-meter and 3-meter diving events during his first two years at Stanford.
Even good habits are hard to break, meaning that Ipsen made it a sweep of both springboard events again this year.
Ipsen penned another line to his growing resume with a 913.15 to win the 3-meter Friday at Air Force's Cadet Natatorium, one day after copping the same honor in the 1-meter at the NCAA Zone Diving Championships.
Ipsen left little doubt by out-doing second-place Harrison Jones (837.65) of Arizona State.
Ipsen also swept the two dives at this year's Pac-12 Conference Diving Championships.
Ipsen was joined in the finals by teammates Noah Garcia (4th, 733.50), Connor Kuremsky (6th, 705.65) and Taylor Sishc (10th, 673.55).
Ipsen went 450.10 to lead after the prelims with Garcia (370.20) in third. Kuremsky moved up two spots from his eighth-place 333.70 in the opening round.
The Cardinal divers continue the NCAA Zone Championships with the platform event on Saturday.
On the women's side, Sloane Brazina posted a brilliant performance off the 1-meter springboard to finish seventh overall at the NCAA Zone Diving Championships Friday at Air Force's Cadet Natatorium.
Brazina grinded through the finals with 549.95 points, jumping four spots from her 267.25 in the prelims.
Brazina was joined in the finals by Lillian Hinrichs, who was 16th with 519.60 points.

Junior forward Dwight Powell announced on Friday afternoon he will return to Stanford for his senior season.
"The opportunity to finish my degree and do something special with these guys makes it an easy decision," said Powell, an All-Pac-12 First Team selection. "I'm excited to continue playing with my teammates and know we have a great chance to achieve our goals. This offseason will be very important for me, in order to improve in several areas while further developing my game. The coaching staff has been supportive and instrumental in helping me make improvements and I look forward to building on that."
Powell, who is Stanford's first All-Pac-12 First Team selection since Jeremy Green in 2011, also was named this year's Pac-12 Most Improved Player.
"We are obviously excited to have Dwight return for his senior season," said head coach Johnny Dawkins. "Dwight fully understands the importance of earning his degree and is mature enough to recognize the support system he has in place here on campus. I know Dwight is determined to work hard at refining his game and improving on what has been a terrific junior year."
Fully healthy and contributing consistently, Powell is showcasing the type of dynamic all-around game many expected when he first arrived on The Farm.
The only Pac-12 player ranked among the league's top-10 in both scoring and rebounding, Powell is averaging a team-best 15.4 points while ranking second on the squad with 8.2 rebounds.
In addition to compiling nine double-doubles, Powell is shooting 48.1 percent overall and 79.9 percent from the foul line while totaling 68 assists, 35 blocks and 22 steals.
He has produced nine 20-point games while reaching double figures in 19 consecutive games and 26 overall. — Stanford Athletics Are you receiving Express, our free daily e-mail edition? See a sample and sign-up for Express.
