Palo Alto scored two runs in the top of the 11th inning to pull out a 4-2 nonleague baseball win over host Tracy on Saturday.

Austin Poore and Isaac Feldstein each had a pair of hits for the Vikings (4-4) while Feldstein added a triple and Michael Strong a double. Paly batters, however, struck out 11 times.

Chris Smith and freshman Riley Schoeben combined on a five-hitter although the two also hit a combined seven batters. Smith got the win, improving to 2-2.

Palo Alto returns to SCVAL De Anza Division action this week with a home-and-home series with Saratoga. The defending co-champion Vikings host on Wednesday at 3:30 p.m., before traveling on Friday.

In another nonleague game Saturday, Sacred Heart Prep played its annual matchup with Sacred Heart Cathedral and the host Irish rallied for a 4-3 victory at Westborough Park in San Francisco.

The Gators (5-3) took a 3-1 lead into the bottom of the seventh before the Irish scored three times for the win. Junior Will Reilly had two hits for SHP and Tyler VauDell provided a double and two RBI.

Girls' lacrosse
Menlo School hosted St. John's of Houston, Texas, for their first meeting since 2004 and the visitors came away with a 20-9 nonleague triumph. The Knights (0-1) trailed 10-3 at halftime. St. John's showed little signs of fatigue (in their second of three contests of the day), following a closely fought battle in San Francisco, where it emerged the victor in the final minutes versus St. Ignatius, earlier on Saturday.

In a season home opener, Menlo rookie goalkeeper, senior Ellie Still recorded seven saves in her debut in cage against the preseason No. 3 program in the south region.

It was a tale of too many turnovers for Menlo as the Knights struggled to convert on nearly 30 successful draw controls and eight combined caused turnovers and interceptions.

Notable players for Menlo were senior captains Ali Kim (Brown-bound) and Brooke Bullington (Bowdoin-bound) in the midfield and junior defender Alyssa Sherman.

Menlo played without standout Michaela Michael, sidelined by illness. Menlo also is missing starting goalie Hannah Rubin, sidelined for about a month following an injury she sustained during soccer season.

For St. John's, Robby Rybarczk notched six goals as the lead scorer of the game. St. John's also was scheduled to play Paly following the Menlo match.

Softball
Palo Alto saw its record dip to 2-2 following a 13-3 nonleague loss to visiting Leland on Saturday. The Chargers scored six times in the first inning to set the stage for the 10-run mercy-rule decision.

Julia Saul had a double and RBI while Hannah Bundy drove in two runs for the Vikings with another double.

Track and field
Nico Robinson of Sacred Heart Prep won the 110 high hurdles in 15.12 and the Menlo-Atherton boys took the 1,600-meter relay in 3:31.80 to highlight local efforts at the annual Kiwanis-Bellarmine Classic on Saturday at Los Gatos High.

Zack Plante of M-A was fourth in the 400 (52.34) while teammate George Baier was fourth in the 1,600 (4:19.69). The Bears' Tony Filiai finished third in the shot put (47-1 1/2).

In the girls' meet, M-A's Taylor Fortnam was fourth in the 800 (2:25.00) with the Bears' 400 relay taking second (52.03) and the 1,600 relay third (4:17.45).

Gunn's Cat Yu was second in the discus (101-3) while teammate Kirsten Baird was third in the high jump at 5 feet.
