Stanford split a pair of relay events while setting two school records Wednesday evening at the King County Aquatic Center to take control of the leaderboard after the opening session of the 2013 Pac-12 Conference Women's Swimming and Diving Championships in Federal Way, Wash.

Stanford set records in both the 200 medley and 800 free relays, earning 118 points to stand atop the eight-team field. Arizona (116) is second in front of USC (110) and Cal (108).

"We had a nice start to the meet this evening with our relay performances," Stanford head coach Greg Meehan said. "Andi Murez and Felicia Lee, in particular, did a great job given they swam on both relays. It was nice to finish the session with a win in the 800, but this was one of seven sessions this week. We need to be ready to go in the morning."

Stanford continues the meet on Thursday with the prelims of the 500 free, 200 individual medley, 50 free and 3-meter. Thursday's finals will begin at 6 p.m.

The Cardinal was third in the 200 medley relay with an NCAA 'A' cut 1:36.54. Lee, Katie Olsen, Maddy Schaefer and Murez broke the previous school mark of 1:36.82 set in 2012. Lee was also part of last season's record-breaking relay.

Another NCAA 'A' cut and school record came in the 800 free relay with Lee and Murez pulling double duty. The duo was joined by Maya DiRado and Julia Anderson to finish in 6:57.12.

The previous Cardinal record (6:58.64) stood since 2009.

Baseball
Stanford senior RHP Mark Appel was named one of 30 college baseball candidates for the 2013 Senior CLASS Award, as announced Wednesday by the award committee.

The All-American righty and 2012 NCBWA Pitcher of the Year has helped steer the Cardinal to a 6-2 record and five straight wins entering this weekend's home series against Texas.

To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence -- community, classroom, character and competition.

Women's basketball
For the second time in two days, Stanford forward Chiney Ogwumike was named to a national player of the year midseason list, being named to the Naismith Trophy Top 30 by the Atlanta Tip-Off Club Wednesday.

On Tuesday, she was named to the USBWA Ann Meyers Drysdale Award Midseason Top 20 List. She is also a candidate for the Wade Trophy and John R. Wooden Award.

Entering this week, Ogwumike is the only player to rank in the national top five in scoring (22.7 ppg, third), rebounding (12.7 rpg, fifth), field-goal percentage (58.2, fourth) and double-doubles (22, second) in the NCAA's latest national stat rankings (Feb. 25).

Ogwumike is also on pace to capture the Pac-12's Triple Crown, leading the loop in scoring, rebounding and field-goal percentage in addition to double-doubles. Through Feb. 25 she has been named Pac-12 Player of the Week a record-tying five times.

Stanford travels to Washington and Washington State this week to close out the Pac-12 regular season. Both games will be televised nationally on the Pac-12 Network, beginning with Thursday's 7 p.m. tip at Washington and concluding with Sunday's noon tip at Washington State.
