For her outstanding efforts during last weekend's Mary Nutter Classic in Cathedral City, Stanford pitcher Kelsey Stevens has been selected as the Louisville Slugger/NFCA Division I National Player of the Week.

The freshman helped the No. 16 Cardinal to a 4-1 record this past week by going 3-0 with a pair of complete-game shutouts, a 0.00 ERA and 19 strikeouts in 19 innings while allowing No. 13 Georgia, Virginia and No. 23 Florida State to total just seven hits and a .115 combined batting average.

Still only a rookie, Stevens also managed to toss the 10th perfect game in Stanford history during the triumph over the Cavaliers, facing the minimum of 21 batters while striking out 10. In her initial start at the prestigious event against No. 13 Georgia, she permitted just four hits and struck out three as the Cardinal rolled past the Bulldogs, 6-0.

With her impressive efforts, Stevens improved her season mark to 8-1 overall and has now not allowed an earned run over her last 35.2 frames of effort.

Next up for the Cardinal is a trip to Fullerton for the Easton Invitational, Friday-Sunday. Stanford is slated to face Iowa, Wisconsin, Cal State Fullerton, Northwestern and Indiana.

Baseball
Stanford extended its winning streak to five games with its 7-2 nonconference victory over host St. Mary's.

Jonny Locher shined for the Cardinal on a sunny Tuesday afternoon at Louis Guisto Field, going 3-for-5 with a pair of doubles and a run for the visiting Cardinal (6-2).

The 14th-ranked Cardinal will take a few days off before welcoming Texas to Sunken Diamond for a three-game series (Friday through Sunday). Game one begins on Friday at 5:30 p.m.

St. Mary's (4-4) scored early to set the stage for a third straight come-from-behind victory for Stanford. The Cardinal hinged its offensive production on a season-high 15 hits while the bullpen surrendered one run. Stanford has now recorded double-digit hits in each of its last three contests.

Locher was one of three Cardinal with three hits and was joined in that department by Danny Diekroeger and Brant Whiting. Whiting only saw four pitches.

Colin Ferguson homered off of Dean McArdle in the first while the Cardinal waited until the third to tie it at 1-1. Diekroeger followed Locher's double with a single to left to plate the freshman outfielder.

McArdle tossed the first 3.0 innings and held the Gaels to one earned run on three hits.

David Schmidt (2-0) tossed the next three frames, striking out four without a walk. The Gaels managed four hits and one earned run off of Schmidt.

The Cardinal took the lead on Drew Jackson's RBI groundout as part of a two-run fourth. Austin Slater started the inning with a walk and Dominic Jose's double down the leftfield line drew chalk to put two on base for Jackson's at-bat.

Jackson brought home Slater, and Whiting singled through the right side to score a charging Jose, who never thought twice when rounding third.

Locher's second double on the day nearly scored Whiting, but the catcher was thrown out at the dish on a one-hopper by St. Mary's rightfielder Brenden Kalifus.

Trevor Ellison singled in the bottom half of the fourth to score Anthony Villa and bring the Gaels within one, 3-2.

Justin Ringo belted a two-out solo homer to right for Stanford's 10th hit which gave the visitors a 4-2 cushion in the seventh.

Sam Lindquist fanned three in the seventh while leaving a pair of Gaels stranded.

Two were away when Jackson singled up the middle in the eighth. Whiting followed with a standup triple to the wall in center to put Stanford ahead, 5-2. Whiting went 3-for-4 with a team-high two RBI.

Brian Ragira's second hit followed a Diekroeger leadoff single in the final stanza. Ringo drew a walk and Slater slammed a sacrifice fly to center to score Diekroeger from third. Lonnie Kauppila drove in Stanford's seventh run with an RBI single to right-center.

Women's basketball
Cardinal junior forward Chiney Ogwumike was one of 20 players named to the U.S. Basketball Writers Association's 2013 Ann Meyers Drysdale Award Top 20 Midseason Watch List on Tuesday.

Ogwumike is one of nine juniors on the list and one of two Pac-12 players along with California's Gennifer Brandon.

The award is to be presented by its namesake at the USBWA women's awards press conference on April 7 prior to the start of the NCAA Women's Final Four semifinals.

Ogwumike, a consensus national player of the year contender, is the only player to rank in the national top five in scoring (22.7 ppg; third), rebounding (12.7 rpg; fifth), field-goal percentage (58.2; fourth) and double-doubles (22; second) through the NCAA's latest national stat rankings (Feb. 25).

On a national scale, Ogwumike's performances against Top 25 teams this season have been extraordinary. In 10 matchups with ranked teams, Ogwumike has averaged 21.3 points and 11.3 rebounds and shot 53.5 percent from the field as Stanford has gone 8-2, including a perfect 6-0 away from home.

Her play in 2012-13 has carried Stanford to its first No. 1 ranking since March 2005, a spot the Cardinal held for six weeks (Nov. 19-Dec. 31). Currently, the Cardinal is ranked fourth in the Associated Press Poll with an overall record of 26-2 and tied atop the Pac-12 table at 15-1 with No. 6 California.

Tennis
For the first time perhaps ever, the Stanford men's and women's teams are nowhere to be found among the ITA Division I national rankings.

The Cardinal women are ranked No. 26 while the men are 41st, falling from No. 28.

In the singles and doubles rankings, only Stanford freshman Krista Hardebeck has a top-20 position -- ranking No. 14 in singles. No other Cardinal players are ranked among the top 25 in singles or doubles.
